Saturday 30th June 2012 – walk **** mixed sunny periods with showers

Good night and lovely view this morning :) Shame they came to empty the portokabin loos at 6.30!!! Still it meant I got up to take a photo of the rainbow :) The weather is still overcast but sunny
Patches and very windy but offshore here in Mumbles !!! We had a chat with Mag and the lady with the VW van next door which has a funky conversion. We moved the van and parked on the road opposite. The wind is very strong out to sea but not much on the shoreline so the racing was a nightmare and they didn’t know what to do with the teenage fleet! We walked to the lighthouse, only reachable at low tide and it was blowing a gale over there! It was a good walk though :) Back to watch the racing. Sat with the Dad of Lucy Taylor who is in the youth national squad so will have to see if she becomes famous later in life! He was very pleasant and she was lovely :) They live in Christchurch. We walked to the Co-op and bought some bread and Welsh Cakes :) Back to the van and left Mumbles about 1 thinking we would drive along the coast a bit for lunch. Of course it doesn’t work like that and Mag can feel me getting really fidgety about windsurfing because it is windy and I can’t find a venue! We went to most of the beaches along the south coast of the Gower and you either couldn’t access them at all or you had to pay up to £5 in the car park! If you just wanted to have a look you had to pay £1 for an hour – it’s just like Norfolk :( Most of the beaches are at the end of a long dead end and you then have to come back on yourself. We ended up driving right along to Rhossili beach and worm head – it is beautiful –a really long lovely sandy surf beach, very green hills and cliffs behind. No good for windsurfing too long a walk but great anyway. We had our late lunch and then walked to the end near worm head – we got wet because it went from sunny to rain in an instant – again! There were some crazy people coasteering which involves wearing a wet suit, a crash hat and jumping in like a mad thing into a cauldron of water off rugged rocks!!! Back to the van for a drink and read then we did the walk again. We took the rest of the carrot sticks which are going to manky and gave them to the horses. This time we walked right round the corner to the next cove round and back across the fields. We saw a seal :) Left the car park and then had to find somewhere to stay which at that late hour is always going to be a bit fraught but amazingly we found a fantastic place – a car park for a woodland walk called Millwood near Oxwich Bay and Penrice. We had a walk in rather a spooky wood – there is a Mill and an overgrown pond which used to be a fish pond in 4 sections where they kept fish until they were eaten at the big house over the road. The mill is fed by a lake further up the walk. Back to the van for a spam egg and beans tea and bed.
